New York State Conservation Council Working on Menhaden Project

The NYSCC is working on protecting the striped bass, weakfish, bluefish and the vital ecosystems of the Hudson River and Chesapeake Bay.
The effort is the result of recent reports regarding the decrease in numbers of the Atlantic Menhaden fishery. These fish serve as forage for the striped bass, weakfish, bluefish, and is also a food source for many sea birds (including the loon and osprey).
The NYSCC is advocating that a cap limit be placed on the harvest of the Atlantic Menhaden for at least 5 years, and that it be renewable for another five years if necessary in the Chesapeake Bay and surrounding areas. . We also are asking for a management plan that would include multi-species interaction and that a research program for t Chesapeake Bay and surrounding areas such as the Hudson River that develops sound scientific information about forage fish such as Atlantic Manhaden.
At the current time the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission (ASMFC) is considering an Addendum 2 to the Interstate Fisheries Management Plan for the Atlantic Menhaden. We are asking all individuals and groups to make comments to : Ms. Nancy Wallace, Atlantic States Marine Fishing Commission, 1444 Eye Street, NW, Washington DC 2005 or email comments@asmfc.org . All comments must be received by August 1, 2005.
Please help today to protect the striped bass fish population here in New York State by acting now.
