NYSCC Members Work with Youth

Laser shooting, 3D archery, fishing and orienteering on the agenda

135 youth of all ages gathered on a sunny but chilly April day to enjoy the outdoor opportunities provided at the annual Jakes Day of the Springville Strutters Chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation. The youngsters enjoyed hot chocolate and doughnuts before attending one of the various activities. Participants were divided into groups for hands-on training and fun in an activity suited to their age. There was laser shooting, archery, orienteering, and fishing. Members of Southtowns Walleye taught participants how to cast.

An all-you-could-eat lunch was provided for everyone, including parents. After lunch, a wildlife rehabilitator gave a presentation on her work with rehabilitating injured animals.

Those participating in an orienteering course learned how to use a compass.  Four courses were set up, with a hidden object found if the course was followed correctly using compass bearings. A Quaker Boy turkey box call was the prize for using the compass correctly.

When the activities were over, everyone’s name was drawn from a hat, with the first one drawn receiving a mountain bike.  Every youngster went home with memories of a great day and a prize, including many turkey calls. The members of the Springville Strutters not only worked with the youngsters on Jakes Day; they also worked to acquire and pick up all of the donations for this day.  Many of the youth were sponsored by local sportsmen’s clubs.
